This painting is about my study of Chinese landscape painting and some of the frames used by early Chinese painters to create an experience for the viewer. One compelling frame is the notion of being able to see from the base to the top of a mountain in a single painting. The impossibility of this is a beautiful prompt for making a work. Technically the mountain would be easier to paint this way in deeper space, but our mountains often rise up right in front of us.

The Philosopher Walks is a series of paintings studying Chinese landscape painting. They are about a philosopher who walks the mountains, right up to the waterfalls, seeking enlightenment. Her story is inspired by poets, daoists and artists recorded in the Biographical Dictionary of Chinese Women, a 4 volume inventory of women in Chinese history.
